With me today is Dr. Timneet Gehbru. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t familiar with Timneet’s full background until I started researching her for the show. The wonderful Elena Rossini suggested I reach out to her. I did know Dr. Gebru was an active member of the fediverse, well liked, and vocal critic of big tech and the atrocities being committed in the world. When I started actually looking into Timneet’s background, I’m now extremely nervous and humbled to be speaking with her. Timneet is Ethiopian born, came to the US when she was 15, attended Standford for electrical engineering and computer vision, then proceeded to work for the world’s largest Tech companies. Apple, Microsoft and Google. It was at Google that she published a historic paper “On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots: Can Language Models Be Too Big? 🦜”. This caused Google to accept a resignation that she never offered, which led to more than 7,000 people from within Google and academic and civil societies to sign a letter condemning her firing. She then founded DAIR, Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research Institute.
